Hi all -

Ben is a friend from Oregon who is part of the Joyscouts and we see at
OODE each year! Ben is wonderfully happy person and always a joy to
see. I'm very sad to hear about this right now, as Ben and I shared a
very special moment at OODE reflecting and James and how special he was
to our communities. Please help out if you can - it would certainly
mean a lot to his family and to him.
Hey folks,

I just got off the phone with my Mom--Ben Beekman was in a fire
yesterday morning and is now on life support at Emanuel Hospital in
Portland. 40% of his body is severely burned and he will require
extensive surgeries to recover. More details can be found here:

http://www.gazettetimes.com/articles/2007/08/10/news/community/3aaa02_fire.txt

George and Susan Beekman, Ben's parents, need our help, support and
prayers. They would like to get the word out about Ben's situation
to all of his friends. Ben's medical insurance will *not* fully cover
the expenses of the life support or surgeries that he will require in
the coming weeks. Ben's Dad can be reached at
beekman at - iconfluence.com.

with love,

[From OODE list - Benjy offers to help coordinate donations if you want
to do it online!]

To donate to Ben's medical fund, mail a check to

OSU Federal Credit Union
P.O. Box 306
Corvallis, OR 97339

Make the check payable to Ben Beekman, account 336139 . On the Memo line of
your check you can put "Medical fund." and maybe "Love, OODE."

I realize that lots of us are stymied by the step of physically mailing a
check, so:
If you're donating under $100, I'll take Paypal at benjy@feen.com and then
mail the cash to OSU FCU.

(If an official Paypal account gets set up, let me know.)

San Francisco Lovefest needs medical volunteers!

San Francisco Lovefest (formerly called Loveparade San Francisco) is in its fabulous third year celebration of electronic music and dance involving 25 floats in a parade down Market St., 200 DJs playing at Civic Center plaza, and over 50,000 people dancing in the streets with many hundreds of volunteers that make it all happen. Similar to Burning Man camps, the floats in San Francisco Lovefest are produced and paid for by local and national collectives to showcase the creative spirit of the electronic dance music community.

San Francisco Lovefest is a non-profit organization based on community, and a community needs help keeping safe and healthy when things just go a little south of right. In that spirit, SF Lovefest is seeking medical volunteers to help with first aid, first response, and taking care of our own. Medical volunteers will be out working with the crowds, so you'll still have plenty of time to wander and listen to some great music while being there, just in case.

So what does it take to be a volunteer? You need to be a currently certified and practicing EMT, Paramedic, Nurse, or Doctor with at least one year experience and a willingness to volunteer some of your time. Volunteers will be working side by side with Lovefest's allied partners for advanced life support and clinical care, so you'll have extra helping hands when you need it. Oh, and did we mention that you'll get a neat tee shirt to top it all off? We look forward to hearing form you!

To volunteer or for more information, email medical(at)sflovefest.org

ROBBIE HARDKISS
With his brothers Scott Hardkiss and Gavin Hardkiss, Robbie Hardkiss is a central figure in the infamous Hardkiss family of DJs and musicians. Working in their hometown of San Francisco, the Hardkiss brothers were instrumental in developing the U.S. rave and outdoor party scene in the early '90s. Pioneering Hardkiss tunes such as "3 Nudes In A Purple Garden" and "Rainery" helped define the psychedelic West Coast breakbeat sound that continues to grow today. Their legendary status within the realm of electronic music was immortalized with the release of their double album, Delusions of Grandeur.

Since then, Robbie Hardkiss has gone on to remix songs (with and without his brothers) for artists such as Elton John, Freestylers, Spacetime Continuum, The Grid, Lords of Acid, The Sandals, Q-Burn, God Within (aka Scott Hardkiss), and Hawke.

Scott, Gavin and Robbie, the Hardkiss brothers, ruled the underground San Francisco club scene during the 1990s with a mixture of acid, trance and breakbeat techno. World-class DJs all, the brothers also run their own Hardkiss label, releasing material as themselves plus myriad other artists, including Rabbit in the Moon and Scott's God Within project. It was Scott and Gavin who formed the group in the early '90s after experiencing Britain's 1989 Summer of Love firsthand while studying in Europe. Returning to the States, the two began promoting and organizing massive raves on the East Coast, but later moved out to San Francisco to share the vibe with the West as well. Hooking up with old friend Robbie and christening themselves Hardkiss, the trio began recording material for their eponymous label. Though few releases appeared on anything other than vinyl, the label compilation Delusions of Grandeur serves as a good primer to the Hardkiss sound. Scott, Robbie and Gavin have each released compilations detailing their mixing skills as well. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

A Magical Gathering
July 1st through July 4th

Following in the footsteps of the Magic
and Light camp-outs, rEvolution continues
a tradition of almost ten years of mountain
gatherings, as we return to a sacred
meadow in the forests of the Sierra Nevada
mountains. Of course we'll be providing
crystal-clear slammin' sound, sick visuals
and lighting, and an awesome mix of
music from family DJ's and special guests.
And of course we'll be gathering in an
incredible environment; a space of power,
with grassy meadows, wildflowers, waterfalls,
swimming holes and amazing trees, all
high in the mountains. What's far more
important is what we're asking you to bring.

In the early days of the electronic music
dance scene, parties were a wide-spread
expression of creativity and interaction.
And those creative outlets were not solely
the domain of the event crew and musicians.
We want to return to our roots, to propagate
a revival, a re-evolution so to speak, of
creativity, free expression, and participation;
by and for all. And so we are asking all
those who plan to attend to bring something
special to share with others, be that crazy
costumes, cool stuff to give away, performance
of any sort, weird trip toys, visual/tactile/
performance/fashion art, free food or drink
or whatever. Basically anything that you feel
would be an expression of yourself that will
provoke a response in others. And if you
have something spectacular to share, and
you need assistance from the rEvolution
crew, please don't hesitate to ask for help.
And now for the line-up...

For this event we're flying in one of our all-time favorites, Robbie
Hardkiss, for an exclusive SF performance (one night only; it's all his schedule would allow!). He's played for us three times before in Boston and we believe is responsible for (at least) one of the best sets ever at The Phoenix Landing, not to mention repeatedly blowing our minds on various dancefloors since 1993. Supporting talent comes from local hero and Sunset resident DJ, Solar, and Moxie Music resident DJ, Bryan James. We've chosen the bar Amnesia as a perfect setting; intimate, dark, and red! We'll be projecting video by local and established artists, and reinforcing the sound system for proper punch!

=============================================
Biography: Robbie Hardkiss

In the Early 90's, Robbie Hardkiss and his "brothers" Scott and Gavin
helped pioneer the American electronic music scene with their ground
breaking record label Hardkiss Music. They quickly joined the ranks of the
domestic DJ elite, and in 1995 reached legendary status with the release
of their classic album, "Delusions of Grandeur." In addition to his
Hardkiss productions, Robbie has released music under the names Little
Wing and Boozy+Swan. The success of his original material has lead to
remixing projects for a diverse group of heavy hitting artists, including
Elton John, Duke Ellington, Lords of Acid, Detroit Grand Pubahs and
Q-Burns Abstract Message. In addition to his critically praised production
work, Robbie has become an internationally respected DJ, playing his
signature funked-up house sound regularly throughout North America and as
far away as the UK, Europe, South Africa, and Hong Kong. In 2003, Robbie
was signed to the world-renowned London based label, Classic. His debut
12" release, "Everything is Changing", has been dubbed a "classic" by
Mixmag; while DJ Magazine proclaimed, "If Bootsy finally dragged Prince
onto the Mothership and they went for a jam with the Venusians, they'd
probably come up with something like this."

=============================================
Profile: Redlight Music

Redlight has been one of Boston's preeminent event organizers for the better part
of a decade. Their weekly party at The Phoenix Landing ran for seven and a
half years, built the venue from obscurity into the hub of New England's
underground scene, and championed diversity within the dance music format;
playing host to countless global heavyweights including Derrick Carter, Rob
Mello, Funk D'Void, DJ Hell, Tiga, Christian Smith, Marco Carola, Chris
Liebing, and Mixmaster Morris. Redlight is also known for a legendary
series of warehouse parties in the late 90's which focused on uniting a
community fractured by genrefication and which consistantly drew crowds of
600-1000 people with only a week's word-of-mouth promotion. In 2004 Redlight moved its base of operations to San Francisco.

I want to stay in the area if I can, but it looks like I might end up trying to FIT in NY or Esmod in Paris, and im still looking around London.
I saw some of you this weekend when Ray & I flew in for Chillits. It was so heartwarming for me...Too much time between visits!

I loved hearing about what everyone was up to, but then it made me a bit sad because I wasn't there to be a part of it.

People asked "When will you be in the Bay Area next?" and I don't know! I want it to be tomorrow...but realistically it won't be for many months.

So yeahyeah, I'm being all gushy, lalala...but I see everyone twice a year if I'm lucky and every moment is precious. When I spend time with the CF family and all our cousins, I don't take it for granted.

This time was great too because I bonded with people I hadn't spent enough time with before.

I'm curious if the goals are simply to reach people within our own community or to use CFCA as a medium for CF to reach out to the Bay Area community? I'm also curious about any CFCA projects in the works.

Thanks,

Just heard that from this day forward, every September 9th is "Expectant Father's Day" -- it's purpose is to give a little sugar to often overlooked expectant dads. I guess people think that a huge amount of energy is thrown at the expectant mom and child and that poor dad is neglected... There's even a website: http://www.expectantfathersday.com -- in case you were ever wondering what happened to Alan Thicke of Growing Pains, he appears to be the "Poster Dad"...

The website is um, scary, but my mind still thinks of Scott!! HAPPY EXPECTANT DADDIES DAY!!!!! Next year there will be a Hallmark card :)
